The 2017 Autumn Tests are now fast approaching. Scotland’s hugely anticipated Autumn Tests against Zealand, Australia and Samoa is certainly a treat for all Rugby fans.
Scotland V Samoa – Saturday 11th November 2017 – Kick-off 2.30pm
The Autumn Tests kick off against Samoa. The powerful and exciting South Sea Islanders have been playing international rugby since 1924 and have beaten Australia, Wales and Italy in recent years.
The last time Samoa played in Scotland (at Pittodrie in 2010) they won 19-16. However, they’ve met three times since then with the Scots winning each game: in Apia (17-16) during the 2012 Summer Tour; in Durban (27-17) in 2013 as part of a quadrangular tournament, and most recently – and most crucially – in Newcastle during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, when a late Greig Laidlaw try sealed a dramatic 36-33 victory and passage to the quarter-finals. New head coach Gregor Townsend’s first home game promises to be an absolute cracker!
Scotland V New Zealand – Saturday 18th November 2017 – Kick-off 5.15pm
The All Blacks need little introduction – they are the number one ranked team in the world, the current world champions and will be coming to Scotland in November after taking on the British & Irish Lions over the next few weeks. Although Scotland have never beaten New Zealand in Test rugby (famously, the Scotland 7s team became the first Scottish team to beat New Zealand when they won at the London 7s World Series tournament in May this year) there have been some close encounters at BT Murrayfield over the years.
Of these classic encounters (which include the 1983 classic when Scotland, at 25-25, came within a last-minute conversion of winning) the latest was only three years ago when the Scots pushed them all the way (with Tommy Seymour scoring a classic interception try) before eventually going down 16-24. Can Gregor Townsend pick up where the Scotland 7s team left off and guide Scotland to victory? Don’t miss it!
Scotland V Australia – Saturday 25th November 2017 – Kick-off 2.30pm
The Wallabies have won the Rugby World Cup twice (1991 and 1999) and been runners-up twice (2003 and 2015) and are currently ranked number 3 in the world. They play Scotland in Sydney this weekend (Saturday 17 June) and are heading to Edinburgh in November for a return match.
If the last two games between these two countries is anything to go by, then this climax to the Autumn Test Series should be a thriller! In the quarter-final of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Australia won by a point (32-33) despite a late Mark Bennett try put the Scots into the lead with a couple of minutes left on the clock. A year later at BT Murrayfield, despite Scotland scoring three tries to two (with a couple from debut centre Huw Jones) the Wallabies again won by a point (22-23). Scotland went one better last weekend, beating Australia 24-19 in Sydney and will be determined to do the same at BT Murrayfield in front of their home crowd… What a way to end the Autumn Tests!
